Sometimes we all just have "stuff" that we don't need anymore, that we can get rid of. Why not trade it for something you can use? We do this fairly often in the "geek world" where action figures, game pieces, books, etc. are traded for something else. I also do it with a set of dishes I collect. I've written here before about my thoughts on Valentine's Day. Basically, I think it's a lot of hoopla for no reason.

Don't get me wrong. I understand why people celebrate it. But from my frugal point of view, it seems pointless.

I used to celebrate it. Back in the day. I'd buy presents for my gal pals and whatever guy I happened to be dating. But when I met my husband, I told him I just wanted to bag it. I told him, "Would it be okay if we didn't celebrate Valentine's Day?" He said yes and bought me something anyway! He didn't believe me! (Gives you an idea of the chicks he dated before me.)

But I held firm. Right from that first Valentine's Day I told him I'd like us to be kind to each all the time rather than just one "Hallmark holiday" a year. We also have so many other days when we are buying presents.... birthdays, anniversary's.... and adding Valentine's Day was just too much. Part of it is the frugal side of me.... and part is the fact that I like to show my hubby I love him all the time. I don't like to limit it to one day a year just because someone else puts something on the calendar.

I even made a scrapbook page about the fact that we don't celebrate Valentine's Day! It's hilarious (at least my husband thinks so). It has the reasons why we don't celebrate:

Every time my hubby sees this page he laughs. And so do I.

Because several years ago I wouldn't have thought that I'd feel like this. But when you fill up your life with other things (like a happy marriage and great career) you find that you don't need to jump through hoops for some made up holiday. Instead, your life is full enough every day of the year.

Penzey's Spices

I love to cook, and came across a recipe recently that needed Saffron. The recipe was for a French vegetable soup from Ina Garten's Barefoot in Paris cookbook.

I'd never used the spice before, but the soup looked fabulous. Being the frugal girl I am I went to the local grocery store to price the Saffron, and immediately left when I found out how much it was. I was disheartened. Did I make the soup without the Saffron? Try to use a different spice that might match?

The problem is, nothing really does taste like Saffron. My hubby, who loves my cooking, wanted to try the soup, too. So he suggested we try Penzey's spices here in Milwaukee. I was hesitant, thinking any spice there would be too much money. But I was wrong. Here's why.

It's true that for the more common spices, your grocery store often has competitive pricing. But for the rarer types (like Saffron) Penzey's buys in bulks and therefore doesn't charge as much as the local grocery. More than that, they offer a wide variety of sizes, so you can just what you need instead of an entire jar.

When I priced out what it would cost, it was well worth the money. In the end we had a wonderful and hearty vegetable soup, which saved us money by being meat-free. We also had a great meal without having to go out.

So this is the conclusion I've come to. First of all, learn to cook! It saves you tons and you can eat better than if you went out five nights a week. Second, check out a speciality spice place that buys in bulk. It could offer you just the amount you need and save you money in the long run.

Tightwads Outnumber Spendthrifts

"Tightwads made up 24% of the group, compared to 15% who called themselves spendthrifts."

I'll admit, before I knew what Aldi was, I didn't have a good impression of the place. And then I went there one day, and that changed as soon as I saw the great deals they had there.

Now there's the thing, not everything is fabulous so you have to experiment. But believe me, it's worth it when you find the things that are. Some of the things I like to get there are baking supplies, pizzas (at $1.99 each!), soups, snack bars, salsa, and cereal. Plus they have these veggie crackers which are out of this world (and half off the very same cracker in our regular store.)

Why are they so cheap? They limit their hours, limit their merchandise, and don't really advertise. The savings are significant, so much so that you'll wonder why other stores aren't doing the same thing.

I commented yesterday on my take on having a frugal Valentine's Day, but caught this article today and was stunned to see just how much people spend on Valentine's Day each year.

According to Yahoo:

"Despite the sluggish U.S. economy, this year lovebirds still plan to shell out an average of $123 each on Valentine's Day, up from $120 last year and eclipsing the $101 of 2006. Total outlay for the U.S.: $17 billion, estimates the National Retail Federation's 2008 Valentine's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by market research company BIGresearch."

$123 each? Are you kidding me?

For those that go hog wild with this holiday, let me ask you: WHY? Seriously. Is it really a big day for you? Or do you just feel the pressure because it's expected? I'm not saying you have to be a scrooge, but is spending a ton of dough on something like this the best way to show your loved one how much you care?

Frugal Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!

Now that I've said that, I have to say I'm against spending money on Valentine's Day. ANY money. That means it's just another day for me and my honey.

Don't get me wrong, we're romantic as heck. But we don't believe in blowing tons of money (or any, if truth be told) on Valentine's Day. And I'm the one that started it. When we first started dating, I asked if it would be okay if we didn't celebrate Valentine's Day. He was happy to oblige, but then thought there must be a catch.

Then, when our first Valentine's Day came around he got me a card. I thanked him but said, "I thought we agreed we weren't going to celebrate Valentine's Day." He said he knew that but got me a card "just in case." I laughed. He actually thought I was going to get mad at him for not getting me something for Valentine's Day when in fact I'm the one that told him not to get me anything. (Gives you an idea of the kind of girls he dated before me, hey?)

Like I said, my honey and I are romantic and sweet towards each other, but we're not going to blow money on something just because someone declares it a holiday. Besides all that, why set aside one day per year to say "I love you" when you can do it all year for free?

And here's the secret: I love the fact that we don't celebrate Valentine's Day. I love the fact that I can just ignore this day and instead go about my merry way like normal. I never feel the pressure of getting a gift, never worry about how much I need to spend, never worry about making plans.

Instead, we come together at the end of the day, and just appreciate the good thing we have. And no amount of money in the world can compete with that.

To keep within a budget, it pays to be on the lookout for deals. I don't mean you should run to different stores constantly, but I do mean you should be aware of which places offer the best deals on things you normally buy. So when you're at that store you can pick up the best version of the thing you need for the least amount of money.

One thing I just noticed is that the floor cleaner I like, Fabuloso, is incredibly cheap at Walmart. As in HALF THE PRICE of Walgreens.

Case in point. I paid $2.99 for a 28 oz. bottle of Fabuloso at Walgreens. Later, I noticed it at Walmart for just $2.84 for DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF CLEANER (56 oz.) Not only was it cheaper, you got twice as much.

That's a fabulous but frugal find.

In the meantime, I was intrigued by this article from the Philadelphia Inquirer about frugal plant lady Sharon Barkhymer. She calls herself responsible rather than cheap (love that) and talks about the inexpensive ways she grows things.

I also love a quote by the reporter:

"Seen a "hot new plant" catalog lately? You can spend $50 for a hosta - or you can fill your car with gas."

With that mentality, it's no wonder people are skimping on things like plants. But they add quality of life, and anyone that's frugalicious knows the reason you act responsible with your money is to improve your life. So keep those plants, and grow them inexpensively. Saving on Movie Rentals

I belabored over Netflix for quite a while before I signed up. I wondered if it was REALLY going to be worth it, if we'd really watch enough movies to get our money's worth, or even if .... gasp.... it would cause us to watch more TV than necessary.

Perhaps I'm a worry wart.

Thing is, you can try Netflix before you buy. It's a great way to see if you like the process. You get a couple weeks to watch movies and return them, so you'll get a feel for whether it would work out with your lifestyle.

We've been using it now a couple months. And it's great. AND a great value. For anyone that hasn't tried it yet, it's a nice way to save a few bucks on money rentals, even if you have digital on demand cable.

We thought digital cable was great at first. Rent a movie right on your TV, get it for a day, same price as going to the video store. The problem was a select number of movies available. So if you missed the window to see a movie, it would already be out of the system. If someone recommended one to you that was slightly older (six months or so) you couldn't get it on digital cable.

For value also, Netflix is the way to go. They have numerous plans, from their most popular $16.99 a month to just $5.99 a month. Another great feature is the suggestions. Simply rate some movies you like (and don't like) and they suggest others you might like. So much better than checking in with the pimple faced kid behind the video counter.

I find my family renting many more movies simply because if we know they're bad it's no big deal. If you don't like it, pop it back in the mail the next day and get a new one. You're not $5 because you made a bad choice.

Does being generous fall in line with frugal living? You bet! Being frugal is about spending money the smart way, and that certainly involves putting your money to good use by investing in another person that needs it.

Have I mentioned that the frugal life also involves balance? It's definitely not about eating boring cold meals while you have millions in the bank. It's about balancing spending and saving and giving. It's about knowing what you need, what will make you happy, and understanding that basically we all have too much stuff.

To that end, I was dismayed to read this story about a frugal librarian that had millions in valuable art displayed in her modest home and yet ate cold meals and lived an uber boring life. It also bothers me that the writer used the word "spinster" to describe the poor lady. Sheesh.

Now, I'm speculating on this of course. I never met this woman but the story does hint that she lived a rather mundane life. Maybe she was happy with that. But here's a quote from one of her nephews:

"My aunt bought her clothes from a catalog, ate frozen meals and went everywhere on the bus."

It's a lesson for us. Spend your money wisely, but remember, it's here for your time on earth. Save for the future, but enjoy your life. After this world, God doesn't care about money and we'll all have wealth greater than we can imagine in ways we can't really imagine. Until then, balance out the penny pinching with the occasional extravagance. You deserve it.

Sometimes being frugal involves waiting and shopping around.

Case in point, I first saw this cow creamer a month ago in one of my favorite catalogs, Pierre Deux. Pierre Deux has great French Country furniture and accessories, but they tend to be a little pricey. The creamer is pewter and would look cute on anyone's table. But still, it's almost $40.

Then, I saw this porcelain white creamer at Williams Sonoma for $28. Much less. Still cute. But not nearly the price I wanted to pay.

Then, I visited my local World Market store and saw the exact same white porcelain creamer for only $4.99.

Hmm.... $28 or $5? Let me think......

Ya, I think I'll get the $5 one. And I did!

I'll admit something:

I've always been a little bit frugal.

NOT cheap. NOT a miser. But frugal.

It's served me well over the years.
